The Flavr Savr tomato was the first genetically modified food that humans were able to consume. It was produced by a company called Calgene. Calgene submitted it to US Food and Drug Administration for testing in 1992. The FDA was not able to find any health hazards with the tomato and allowed Calgene to release it into the market in 1994.
